Poor eating habits of students are a cause of concern for their parents. Majority of students in colleges and universities struggle to eat healthy and nutritious food because of their busy schedule and easy availability of fast food. Even though arranging and cooking healthy food can be a tough task for students, it is possible to eat wholesome food items. Visiting restaurants frequently and missing on your meals is not good for your health. Here are some healthy food habits for students to keep them healthy and fit.
1. Make it a habit to eat a nutritious breakfast
Many students have this bad habit of waking up late and then skipping their breakfast in a hurry to attend their classes. If you do not have the time to prepare breakfast in your hostel room, you can at least drink a glass of juice and eat a fruit before moving out. These things can be easily stored inside a refrigerator and it doesn’t take much time to grab juice and fruit in the morning.
2. Choose fast food items wisely
It can be difficult to say no to fast food when you are studying in college. This is because it can have a negative impact on your social life if you always say no to such food when in the company of your friends. However, you can choose wisely so that your health is not affected. When ordering pizza, go for a pizza with half the cheese. Also, learn to say no to fried chips, fried chicken, and fried fish. If you know what sort of fast food is bad for your health, you will take limited quantities and variety that is not as harmful.
3. Buy and store healthy snacks in your room
We don’t have time to buy healthy food items is the common refrain of most college students. However, you cannot make this excuse as you visit grocery stores and super markets every now and then. Make it a habit to buy healthy and nutritious snacks wherever you see them in the stores and keep them with you in your room. You can munch on these snacks whenever you are feeling hungry in between meals without causing any harm to your health.
4. Try to cut down your intake of sugar
Sugar is the enemy of your health and you are better off keeping its intake within limits. Reduce consumption of chocolates, ice creams, and other sweet deserts and eat fruits whenever you feel the urge for a sweet food item. Also, try to add diet sweeteners to your tea, coffee, and milk instead of sugar to stay healthy and fit.
5. Consume lots of water
Water is not only essential for your body but also helps in detoxification by removing harmful chemicals form your bloodstream. You need to drink 7-8 glasses of water daily to fulfil the daily requirements of your body. You need to drink even more if you are fitness freak and do rigorous workouts. The best way to ensure you are drinking enough water, you can carry a bottle of water with you wherever you go in the campus.
6. Eat lots of green vegetables and fresh fruits
There is no substitute for green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits to fulfil the daily requirements of vitamins and minerals in your body. Make sure you eat at least a bowl of one green vegetable every day and 2-3 fruits to stay healthy. If you do not love eating green vegetables, you can eat green salad with dressing as it tastes better.
